The Mayan civilization originated in the Yucatan Peninsula around 2000 BCE. They established themselves in modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. The civilization flourished between 250 and 900 CE, known as the Classic Period.


The Mayans were skilled farmers, traders, and builders. They cultivated maize, beans, and squash. They built impressive cities with pyramids, palaces, and plazas. They also developed a sophisticated calendar system and hieroglyphic writing.

Family was central to Mayan life. Extended families often lived together. Parents taught children skills and traditions. Boys learned farming and hunting, while girls learned cooking and weaving. Marriages were usually arranged by families. They aimed to strengthen social and economic ties. Ceremonies included rituals and offerings to gods. Couples often received blessings from priests.

 and human sacrifices, to appease these gods. They also believed in an afterlife and had elaborate burial practices.
